We attempt to weave sustainability parameters into the fabric of our business processes resulting in tangible gains, This has collectively reflected in our improved triple bottom line which integrates social, economic, and environmental considerations of business.

Undeterred by the continuing turbulence and slump in the steel market we have been able to keep ourselves afloat in these hard times with our understanding and commitment to be a sustainable steel manufacturing business.

We foster a work culture that is growth-focussed and performance-driven. We ensure an encouraging and bias-free workplace through our policies and practices encompassing human rights, ethics and transparency.

In line with our commitment to negate any harm to our workforce, we provided adequate protection in areas of Safety, Health and Environment (SHE).

We have also come together to engage and celebrate festivities and special days, like Republic Day, Makarsankranti Festival, International Women’s Day, Independence Day, Navaratri Festival, Diwali Festival, New Year and Annual Sports for employees - Cricket / Volleyball / Badminton / Chess / Carom.

Planet care

We are proud of the impressive achievement of having a science-based target in place. The world IS witnessing great momentum in corporate climate action through the rapid increase of companies setting ambitious commitments. "Indian steel manufacturer Sanyo Special Steel Manufacturing India Pvt. Ltd., (SSMI) commits to reducing Scope 182 emissions per tonne of steel produced by 35% by 2050, against a 2016 base-year. SSMI also commits to reducing Scope 3 emissions per tonne of steel produced by 35% by 2030 against a 2016 base-year." SSMI IS 1st Steel Company in the world and 1st Company from India and emerging markets to have an approved science-based target in place. Environment Activities included tree plantation on Environment Day.

Our work towards the empowerment of our neighbouring communities has gained more focus and drive, with a greater commitment to deliver better results. We have become more impact-oriented and ensure that we achieve the desired outcomes. We have extended ourselves to the communities during natural calamities, through self-help groups, different health & wellness programmes, training programmes, cleanliness drives, and a lot more.

Measures of Safety

The safety of our people is of utmost importance to us. To achieve this, we have adopted a shared responsibility approach, with increased engagements at all levels of the workforce and strengthening the safety culture at SSMI. We are taking steps to reduce reportable incidents, minimize injuries, and regularly monitor the Safety Activity Rate (SAR) and Safety Perfect Days at our plant.

We collaborate with various industry peers, the Sanyo Group and government bodies including the Directorate General, Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes, Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health and American Society of Safety Engineers for best practices in safety. With a futuristic approach for tackling emergencies at operations, we have developed an exclusive emergency preparedness plan for SSMI.

Discussions are held with the plant safety committee along with department-level safety subcommittee members on specific issues related to hazard identification, risk assessment, determination, and mitigation.

To provide good opportunities for improving the health of workers, SSMI has its own Occupational Health Centre. Medical Centre has established infrastructural and in-house facilities to ensure services to the SSMI, contract employees in Plant & families in the colony. The aims and objectives of the department are to provide preventive, curative, and supportive services to all employees.

Apart from occupational health activity, we are promoting health awareness programmes, free medical check-ups treatment in the surrounding community.

The Board of directors maintains the ultimate oversight and decision making for Sustainability at Sanyo Special Steel Manufacturing India Pvt.Ltd. This helps to mitigate significant risks posed to the company.

Councils

At SSMI we have formed 16 cross-functional teams to work on identified key material aspects like water, energy, waste, CSR etc. These teams are working under guidance of Mentors.

Business Excellence Cell

The Business Excellence Cell has been set up to provide impetus to the sustainability initiative at ground level and will drive various company wide initiatives in a focused way. The team reports directly to the MD.

Ethics & Compliance

Policies

Our policies reflect our commitment and provide the framework to integrate sustainability into each aspect in the organization. The policies and related initiatives are reviewed on a regular basis to revisit targets and validate its core purpose.

Code of conduct

Our code of conduct is approved by the board of directors and defines the ethics transparency, integrity and legal requirements that our people (employees, officers, directors), partners, communities are expected to abide by. SSMI conducts routine trainings for its staff and suppliers to ensure compliance with the code of conduct and corporate culture.

Sustainability Reporting

We have been reporting on our annual sustainability performance through the Mahindra Group sustainability report from last three years. All our reports are based on GRI reporting framework. Our last year Sustainability Report was externally assured and is aligned to GRI G4 Core reporting framework.

    With the regular support of CSR department, Entrepreneurship development training and inspiration, Mrs. Priya Anand started a new business "The Food Square" Hotel at Railway Station, Khopoli on 10 May 2024.
